So. Works have begun on the famed Ikea "Bekvam" (Mr Tonic calls them David Beckhams) Spice Rack bookshelf hack, so here is how things are panning out. Because I know you care. And because I am worshipping at the alter of budget-DIY-Bekvam-$2.49-heaven right now. What's not to lust. Got kids? Cash strapped? Listen up:
(above) The tools of the Bekvam-hanging trade: tape measure, level, offspring's HB pencil. Note the caffeine - you're going to need some form of artificial stimulant before you commence. Havaianas sold separately (actually, I bought them online here). Right. Lets party.
(above) Given the proportions of the wall, I went for the fetching side-by-side configuration, in four "shelves"/rows, almost up to door height. Who cares if a 3 year old can't reach the top shelf? I can. And besides. Looks good.
(above) See? They work and everything. And admittedly, they do actually look quite good unpainted. But...
(above) Enter Mr Tonic, a can of undercoat and a Bosch spray gun*. OMG. Mr Tonic is literally walking around the house looking for something else to spray. That thing is the bomb! * Beyond this point, our renovation will be referred to as Pre-Bosch spray gun and Post-Bosch spray gun.
(above) Consider them undercoated until further notice. Watch this space. And did I mention they were the "Bekvam" Spice Rack? And that they're $2.49 each from Ikea? I did? Oh.

ReplyDeleteSo, the thing is, apart from congratulating you on a brilliant bit of lateral thinking, has your paint hardened? Because I bought a Bosch spray gun, followed the instructions about dilution of paint etc, spray painted a horrible ebay dining table grey...and it looks fantastico, but after months and months the paint is still tacky. You pick a plate up and it sticks slightly! So I'm interested in your experience.
