Sofa? Not so good.

Ever found yourself "in the market" for a new sofa? So, that's us right now - Mr Tonic refuses to let this one move house with us, largely due to the fact that it's a bitch to sit on. The back is way too low, which means zero back/neck/shoulder support. Apart from that, I rather love it. Mr Tonic feels no love for it whatsoever. So it's a long and sad story, and one that has found us in King Furniture every weekend, berating two small children, (usually for spinning on a Delta swivel chair). Currently, the King "Kato Deluxe" (below) is the front-runner. Different "configuration" though...

And in this colour (below)... and leather.

I just feel so very, very lost. Size, configuration, colour, fabric, leather, high, low, long, short, modular, chaise? Aaaargh!!!!!?! And just when you think you've nailed it, the doubt sets in... Ugh. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

We even went and sat on a Togo (above). I'm not even joking. Needless to say, we just weren't convinced, much to our surprise.

Let me share some issues I'm having: 1. I feel we have to get leather because we have children. And a dog. 2. I feel compelled to get a neutral-ish, light-ish colour to acknowledge the fact that it's a house near the beach. 3. The modernist/50s thing. 4. It has to be comfy, not rigid and hard looking. 4. It has to be fairly... big? I think? (The main living room is 4.5 x 6.5 metres.) Help?

  1. I totally feel your pain! We have a 'Jasper' on order - due just before Xmas. Man, it was hard to decide - BUT, so many of my friends and two of my sisters have King couches and they all love them. Totally get the leather thing with children - will look great in a light shade. I LOVE the sound of your new house too...

  2. I love by the beach have 3 children and a dog--I went through the same issue. I really did not want leather and ended up purchasing a sectional in a chenille (light greenish, beige, gold color--sound strange but it works neutrally) -well 10 years later it still looks fab. That fabric wears like iron, hides stains and the couch, well it held up beautifully.

  3. I love your first choice and know how frustrating sofa shopping can be. I just went through it and had many of your same concerns, having three kids and large dog. What I discovered was that I really wasn't limited to leather, which was definitely my first inclination- we ended up getting a sofa finished in some charcoal velvet like material and it is amazing- you could throw a glass of red wine on it and it would just wipe off- there are a ton of really heavy duty fabrics out there that are sooo easy to maintain- just a thought. I love leather but sometimes it's nice to have other colour options etc. Good luck- I'm sure you'll end up with something fabulous.

  4. I like your choice for the mod look but no need to stick with leather. In fact the dogs nails may wreak havoc on it. Choose a microfiber, suede or chenille with a low pile that will look cozy and inviting and stand up to allthat wear and tear. Or how about an indoor/outdoor fabric that is virtually indestructible? Lots of new colors and designs, even a velvet, out there.

Good luck and have fun...it is not a life altering experience so if you make a mistake you can recover, I promise.

  5. I live in the area that you are moving too. Please don't think that just because you are moving to the beach that you have to go all beige and boring! I made that mistake by embracing that look when I first moved here, and I can tell you that it was definitely beige (and white) and within a year or two I was definitely bored!!! Life's too short to live without colour, maybe you can have "pops" of beige with your colour instead.

  6. Try Jardan sofas www.jardan.com (Sky as a first pick ) and think about Mokum Textiles fabric "Ficus" it has teflon woven 'into' the fabric and would repel a missile.Great range of colours and has a lovely texture. Makes up beautifully.Good luck !!

  7. I have three little kids (2 of which are boys), oh and a Jack Russell... my suggestion is the IKEA Karlstad (http://www.ikea.com/au/en/search/?query=karlstad) with slip covers... I have two WHITE three seaters and believe it or not, they're great... and cost around $1000 for both.. (I then spent an obscene amount on a Mark Tuckey (http://marktuckey.com.au/) slab bench coffee table!). The thing with the slipcovers is they just go into the washing machine, out on the hills hoist and back on the lounge in a couple of hours. I find our beige leather lounge gets filthy with the kids and the dirt is ingrained in the leather permanently.

  8. We've been hanging out at the chats wood most weekends too. We're lending towards the Jasper for our space but can't decide between the king cord or leather. My husband wants the cord, probably because it feel and looks so inviting. I'm just worried it will date, it's a pretty big investment! I suppose we'll be back there this weekend again. I think the spring sales finishes Sunday

  11. Lou,

We were in the same boat a while ago, but just kept coming back to the Jasper from King in king cord - and we LOVE it.

Plenty of space for two kids and two adults (and a cat), nice and deep so lots of room to curl up (and sleep if need be!).

Also really glad we decided on the cord. It's so soft and snuggly and EVERYTHING comes off, goes into the washing machine and comes out looking fab.

The cushions are also lovely and squishy without getting flat and in constant need of plumping and you can configure it in myriad ways - which came in handy when we moved into a new house with a completely different shaped living room.

We have a kind of charcoal-ey colour which goes quite well with all my (very) colourful, mix-matched cushions.

About 2 years later, it still looks great and has survived much jumping on by the kids... I cannot recommend it highly enough! x.

P.S. Congrats on the new house, it's beeeootiful!

  13. I am right right right there with you Louise. And it's driving me nuts. We also have 2 little ones and an aging dog (and one little one is only 10 months old so we have toilet training ahead of us). If you're looking for an alternative to King, there are some pretty gorgeous pieces from Norman & Quaine (Living Edge). And of course the Jardan is amazing. Love Danika's tip on the Mokum fabric. We've been looking at something custom-made too. I'm just hating the thought of buying something new and having it peed on. (sorry folks). I'm considering hanging onto old one for a few more years and just getting a nice occasional chair. Decision, decisions. Am watching this thread closely x

  14. If you aren't too keen on leather you could always use an indoor/outdoor fabric - they are usually teflon coated and water resistant so you can wipe up spills easily. Try Mokum or Westbury Textiles... They all have a great range of colours (Mokum has awesome patterns for scatter cushions in the outdoor fabrics).. As for the lounge itself I'm in the same situation at the moment it's sooooo hard and no one understands the pain so I'm glad I'm not alone!! Try Lounge or Jardan.

Oh and just quietly, how painful is the 8-10 week wait for the majority of lounges!!! Grrr..! xx
